Assistant dean to lead peer review team for national association

Thomas C. Heffner, assistant dean of sciences, humanities and visual communications: programs at Pennsylvania College of Technology, has been invited to serve as a program chair for the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Commission on Early Childhood (NAEYC) Associate Degree Accreditation peer review team.

In this capacity, Heffner will lead a group of other early childhood education professionals from across the nation in a review March 10 to 12. The peer review team will travel to a host institution to observe its program in action for three days. The team reads the program’s self-study report, conducts a site visit that includes interviews and observations, and provides a summary of the team’s findings for NAEYC’s commission review.

Heffner holds a master of education degree in child and family studies: early education, as well as a North Carolina state birth-kindergarten licensure from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Juniata College.

In addition to being an NAEYC member and peer reviewer, he is a member of the North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children (for which he served as a state board member from 2007-10) and the Council for Exceptional Children. Heffner has served as a textbook reviewer for McGraw-Hill, Pearson Allyn & Bacon.
