Penn State New Kensington students are heading to the District of Columbia and for parts unknown as the annual spring break begins after classes end Friday, March 7. The campus will remain open, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, March 10-14.
When they could be unwinding after a week of midterm exams, four Penn State New Kensington students will travel to Washington, D.C. for a community service project. Corey Bobak, Mikaela Dunegan, Samantha Mahhuku and Sandra Mahhuku, along with Lauren Blum, assistant to the director of student affairs, will perform a variety of functions at food banks and soup kitchens throughout the nation’s capital.
The New Kensington students will be joined by students from Penn State DuBois. During the eight-day journey, the students will work at community agencies, such as Capital Area Food Bank, DC Central Kitchen and A Wider Circle, a nonprofit organization which provides beds and other furnishing to needy families. The trip will include some sightseeing with scheduled visits to the American History Museum and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The students leave March 8 and return March 15.
Classes resume on Monday, March 17; the campus will remain open for staff during the break. After the break, there are seven weeks remaining in the semester. Final exams conclude May 9, and commencement is scheduled for May 10. The first two summer sessions, intersession and the 12-week session, begin May 12.
