Hixson selected for Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program

Lina Hixson, a doctoral student in Penn State’s College of Nursing, has been selected for the 2014–16 Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program of the Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare.

As one of 250 Jonas Scholars across the country, Hixson will receive $10,000 over the two-year period (matched by the College of Nursing and Penn State’s Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence) to support her doctoral studies.

The Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program was created in 2008 to support the educational development of nursing doctoral students, helping to increase the number of advanced practice nurses and health care leaders as well as nursing school faculty.

“With these grants, the Jonas Center is addressing a critical need for more nurses and the faculty to prepare them,” said Ann Kolanowski, professor of nursing and director of Penn State’s Hartford Center. “The College of Nursing and the Hartford Center are proud to be part of this national effort to stem the nursing faculty shortage and prepare future nurses as America’s health care system continues to evolve.”

Hixson is a second-year doctoral student from McMurray, Pa. Her research interest is faith community nursing and its role in helping older community-dwelling adults manage chronic illness by providing spiritual care.

Housed within the College of Nursing, the Hartford Center was established in 2007 to help prepare nurse educators with a passion for and expertise in gerontological nursing education and practice. The center offers a variety of funding options to support full-time study for graduate and doctoral students who are committed to careers that will benefit older adults.

The Jonas Center, a leading philanthropic funder for the nursing profession, makes grants that advance scholarship, leadership and innovation and collaborates on initiatives with other leaders in the nursing field, with a focus on fostering partnerships across the philanthropic, business, policy and education sectors.
