Thomas Day receives 2013 Penn State Beaver Outstanding Alumnus Award

Thomas Day is the recipient of the 2013 Penn State Beaver Outstanding Alumnus Award. The presentation was made at the annual January dinner meeting of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board in the Lodge of the Beaver campus Student Union Building.

The award is given to a Beaver campus alumnus who has distinguished himself/herself through career achievement, community involvement, and/or involvement with Beaver campus.

Day is the chief executive officer of West Point Products, a manufacturer of replacement toner cartridges and other imaging supplies based in Washington, Pa, where he and his wife, Michelle, reside. Since Day’s purchase of the company, it has grown into a multimillion dollar operation with more than 550 employees in facilities throughout the United States and Canada.

Day attended Beaver campus and received his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Penn State University Park in 1988. He began his career in public accounting with Coopers & Lybrand in Pittsburgh, where he worked in the Financial Audit Department specializing in manufacturing clients. He joined Washington Steel Corp. in 1991 and held various management positions in finance, budgeting and planning, operations analysis and production control. In 1997 he joined North American Refractories Co. as financial controller.

In 2000, Day was elected to the Board of Directors of the Ohio Valley Industrial and Business Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization he served for three years. In 2006 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Imaging Technology Council, a nonprofit trade association for the imaging supplies industry, and in 2010 he was elected to serve on that group’s Executive Committee. In 2011 Day was appointed to serve on the Advisory Board of GeoSpatial Innovations Inc., a software and professional consulting services firm.

In 2012 he formed Day Capital Group LLC to manage a private equity fund dedicated to providing flexible capital solutions for small, privately-held companies. The fund offers private equity, venture capital and mezzanine financing to support start-ups, growth expansion, management buyouts, acquisitions and recapitalizations.

Day is a member of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and chairs the group’s Advancement and Development Committee. He is also a member of the campus Campaign Steering Committee, which is close to reaching its $3 million goal and is a member of the Penn State Beaver Alumni Society Golf Outing Committee, which raised $28,400 for student scholarships last fall.

Day and his wife established a $50,000 endowed scholarship for Beaver campus students in 2011 and made an additional $100,000 pledge to the endowment in 2012. They are lifetime members of the Penn State Alumni Association and became Sustaining Members in 2011. In 2012 they were welcomed into the Penn State President’s Club, which honors distinguished members of the Penn State community whose annual leadership gifts demonstrate their ongoing commitment to academic excellence.
