Men's tennis to open season at home against William & Mary, St. John's

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State men's tennis team opens their spring schedule on Friday as they take on William & Mary at home in the Indoor Tennis Center. The match will begin at 3 p.m. with three doubles matches followed by six singles matches. The Nittany Lions return to action on Sunday at noon against St. John's.

On Saturday, William & Mary and St. John's will play each other at 2 p.m. The Nittany Lions are looking to build off of a strong fall season in which they compiled a total of 77 singles wins and 35 doubles wins.

Penn State was led by freshman Nika Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) with 10 wins. Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) had nine wins.

Four Nittany Lions had eight wins this fall, they were Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain), David Kohan (Sydney, Australia), Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) and Roman Trkulja (Toronto, Canada).

Barry combined with four different teammates to go 13-3 in doubles.

Senior Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) enters the weekend three singles wins away from tying Jamie Gresh (1998-02) with 77 wins for 10th all-time at Penn State. Bader also needs three doubles wins to tie Mike Griesser (1995-99) for 10th all-time with 65 wins.

William & Mary holds a 2-2 mark so far this spring. They defeated Norfolk State and Campbell last week, both by a score of 5-2. They also fell 7-0 at No. 29 Notre Dame and 4-0 at No. 32 Northwestern.

Senior Ben Hoogland went 2-1 out of the number one singles spot. Ben Guthrie, also a senior, went 1-1 at number two. Freshman Damon Niquet leads the team with nine wins.

Aaron Chaffee and Will Juggins combined to go 1-1 at number one doubles. Hoogland and John Banks went 2-0 at number three doubles.

St. John's makes their season debut on Saturday. This fall, R.J. Del Nunzio, Erick Reyes and Vaidik Munshaw each earned nine wins. Del Nunzio and Freddy Ruiz Acevedo collected titles at the Columbia Classic. Munshaw and Gary Kushnirovich claimed draw titles at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational.

Reyes and Del Nunzio paired up to go 8-4 in doubles. Ruiz Acevedo and Michael-John Every were 5-3 this fall.
