ABSENCE submissions deadline announced

The Spring submission deadline for the 2014 edition (Volume 16) of ABSENCE, Penn State Greater Allegheny’s Literary & Visual Art Review is Saturday, Feb. 15. Any Greater Allegheny student, staff, faculty or alumni may submit their original creative work, including poetry, short fiction and drama, nonfiction and creative nonfiction, journalism, personal essays, research and criticism, visual arts and photography, and Teaching International and global themes.

All student submissions will be entered to win a ninth annual Chancellor’s Prize for Best Literary & Visual Art. Also, $1,000 in scholarships will be awarded to students.

Submissions should include a cover page with identifying information, including name, titles of the works being submitted, email, snail mail address and phone number. A maximum of 15 works per academic year will be accepted for review from each individual. Previously published works will not be considered for publication. Upon publication, all rights revert to authors; however, ABSENCE reserves the right to republish all materials and to use materials published in the review to fund its publication.

The student editors of ABSENCE 2014 also announced a call for submissions for a substantive special section of about 40 pages, open to all undergraduates attending any Penn State campus, devoted to the Teaching International themes for 2013-14 -- Canada and global health -- and all creative work with an international/global inspiration or perspective. The deadline for submitting creative work for consideration for inclusion is Saturday, March 22.

Individuals can submit their work as an attachment with their Penn State email to senior faculty adviser and ABSENCE publisher Clifford Manlove at ABSENCE.psuga@gmail.com. All submissions are handled using blind review.

Save the date for the "Celebration of the Arts: A Reading & Reception for ABSENCE Volume 16" from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center.
