Reading Royals night to benefit THON

The Berks County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, the Penn State Berks THON student group and the Reading Royals are teaming up for the fourth consecutive year to hold a fundraising event to benefit THON, the world's largest student-run philanthropy dedicated to supporting children with pediatric cancer and their families, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Santander Arena in Reading.

Jay Paterno, Class of 1991 and a former member of the Penn State football coaching staff for 17 years -- 12 of those years as quarterback coach, and Josh Brandwene, Class of 1991, Penn State's first varsity women's ice hockey coach, will be the keynote speakers.

Tickets for the game are $16 and $11 for Penn State students with a valid student ID, and a portion of every ticket purchased through the chapter will be donated to THON.

There will also be a special pre-game tailgate party in the Santander Arena's Coca-Cola Lounge, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet and hear from Paterno and Brandwene. The tailgate includes food such as hot dogs and hamburgers, chips and pretzels, potato and fruit salad, and Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream. The Penn State Alumni Blue Band will also be in attendance during the night’s festivities. Individuals who already have tickets to the game and would like to attend the pre-game tailgate can do so for $14.

The Reading Royals will wear special Penn State football-themed jerseys. These one-of-a-kind game-worn jerseys will be autographed by the players wearing them and auctioned off following the game, with a portion of the proceeds also benefiting THON.

To keep with the Penn State tradition, the Royals have received special permission from the ECHL to wear jerseys that do not include nameplates on the back, and the Royals logo will be in the traditional bowl game patch location.

Proceeds from the first three years of this event have raised over $30,000 for THON. In addition, the THON families who are sponsored by the Berks campus group will be at the event to meet the Royals players and watch the pre-game warm-ups from the Royals bench area, and Penn State Berks students will be canning for THON in the arena during the game.
