Small fire extinguished quickly at HUB-Robeson Center

A small amount of insulation caught fire in a stairwell wall cavity during construction-related demolition today (Dec. 30) at the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Contractors were cutting a steel beam near the Robeson center end of the building and crews suspect a spark flew into the exterior wall cavity, igniting some insulation. The fire was extinguished quickly and there were no injuries.

Construction workers called 9-1-1 at 1:42 p.m., and the Alpha Fire Co. responded, along with Penn State University Ambulance 20, Penn State Police, and representatives from the University's Office of Environmental Health and Safety and Office of Physical Plant.

The construction crew members were the only occupants of the building, which is closed through Jan. 1 while Penn State is on winter break.

While the small fire gave off a lot of smoke, there is no structural or interior damage to the building. Workers are using large fans to clear the smoke from the building. Fire crews departed the scene about 3:15 p.m.
