UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Pennsylvania has about 121,000 miles of roadway, more than 100 public-use airports and the most railroads of any state, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Each year, Penn State offers a Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference that provides attendees with the information they need to keep this system running smoothly.

“The people in professional practice need to be kept aware of the latest in research and development,” said Martin Pietrucha, director of the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute and professor of civil engineering at Penn State. “The conference is a wonderful opportunity for them to come and learn about new and innovative practices in the field.”

The 19th annual Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference will be held from Dec. 11 to 13 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus. Sponsored by the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute, the event includes seminars facilitated by leading experts, opportunities for discussion among participants and a variety of topic-specific workshops.

This year’s speakers include Scott Belcher, president of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, and Alan Pisarski, a transportation industry veteran of more than 40 years.

The program is themed “Serving the Practitioner,” and it focuses on four components of transportation: design, operations, safety and planning.  Attendees learn through hands-on education programs and can earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs), which are necessary to maintain their professional licenses.

Product exhibitions allow vendors to display newly developed technologies, which range from paving materials to traffic signal mechanisms.

“The conference brings new technology and new knowledge that attendees can take directly back to their jobs and apply,” said Janice Dauber, conference coordinator.

The Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference is one of the largest of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region, according to Dauber. The event attracts about 500 federal, state, municipal and private professionals from Pennsylvania and across the globe.
