Men's basketball to play in 2014 Charleston Classic

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State men's basketball team is one of six teams announced for the eight-team 2014 Charleston Classic, scheduled for Nov. 20-23, 2014, at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. The other participating teams include Akron, Cornell, Miami (Fla.), South Carolina and Southern California, with the remaining two being announced at a later date.

Miami and South Carolina were both part of the 2009 Charleston Classic tourney field, along with the Nittany Lions. The Hurricanes defeated the Gamecocks for the title, while Penn State finished with a 1-2 record. The Lions fell to UNC Wilmington (80-69) and Tulane (63-60) before downing Davidson (87-75) on the final day of competition.

Penn State has taken part in one other early-season tournament in Charleston, S.C., the 1993 Low Country Classic. The Blue and White was defeated by host College of Charleston, 71-65, but bounced back to beat Delaware State, 64-53.

Against the announced field for 2014, the Nittany Lions hold a 14-9 record: Akron (4-2), Cornell (5-5), Miami (3-0), South Carolina (1-2) and Southern California (1-0).

The 2014 Charleston Classic will feature a bracket format with 12 games over three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through the bracket. The two teams who remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on the final day of competition.

Past winners of the Charleston Classic are Colorado (2012), Northwestern (2011), Georgetown (2010), Miami (Fla.) (2009) and Clemson (2008). The 2013 Champion will be crowned on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 9 pm ET on ESPN2.

This family-friendly tournament offers the teams a week of practice, play and experiences in and around historic Charleston.
