Course provides unique urban teaching experience

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—Registration for the College of Education’s urban education seminar is now open. The course, called Philadelphia Urban Seminar (CI 295D), runs from May 18–June 1.

Jeanine Staples, associate professor of education, is professor in charge of the course. She said that the Philadelphia Urban Seminar can help students apply what they have learned in their Penn State courses to any public school environment.

“Participants work directly with children and teachers in Philadelphia public school classrooms,” said Staples. “They also participate in lectures and workshops from leading urban educators and researchers.”

Other valuable aspects of the seminar, according to Staples, are the community service in area neighborhoods and the cultural events in the city.

“The seminar also helps students meet a number of course requirements,” said Staples. “It helps students meet entrance-to-major requirements, or it functions as a 200-level elective for any major at Penn State. Plus, it allows students who need 40 hours of work experience to complete that requirement.”

All registered students will attend a mandatory orientation for this course in April 2014. Information about the academic, social and civic components of the course, in addition to its policies and procedures, will be shared at the orientation.

Staples said that students must secure clearances for the seminar.

“It is recommended that students who are interested in the seminar start the clearance process now,” said Staples. “Often the FBI, child abuse and criminal background checks can take up to eight weeks to be completed.”

Staples added that students can get more information on clearances by visiting the Curriculum and Instruction Field Experience (CIFE) Web page or by contacting Corey Simmons in the College of Education.

Students interested in participating in the Philadelphia Urban Seminar should contact Staples to begin the pre-registration process.
