'Where Genius Meets Imagination' Discovery-U talks set for Nov. 8

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Brief talks by some of the most inspiring science and engineering researchers at Penn State will take place on Nov. 8 in the HUB Auditorium on the Penn State University Park campus.

The free event, called Discovery-U, is designed to give community members and Penn State students, alumni, faculty and staff a glimpse into some of the influential research projects now underway at Penn State. Students considering careers in science and engineering are especially encouraged to attend.

Fifteen speakers in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics were selected as speakers for the event based on nominations by Penn State students.

The speakers will present their talks in a series of three sessions, beginning at 10 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 2 p.m. The first 25 students in the door for each session will receive a Discovery-U T-shirt.

Titles of some of the talks include "The Vehicles Are Driving Us Now: Lessons in Humanity," "Here Be Dragons - Environmental Science for People" and "Power to the Puny: How Do You Make a Micro-Robot?" More details and the complete schedule can be found on the Discovery-U website

Discovery-U will be filmed by WPSU, streamed live at http://www.discoveryu.psu.edu and broadcast on YouTube and other websites after the event. Advance online registration for the event is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.

Discovery-U is a Penn State Science event organized by the Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) student group, the Graduate Student Association, and the Eberly College of Science office of Outreach and Science Engagement (OSE). It is sponsored, in part, by the Dow Chemical Company.
