'Weight of the Nation' community screening, panel discussion set for Nov. 2

Penn State Hershey PRO Wellness Center in partnership with Milton Hershey School will hold a free community screening of the HBO production “The Weight of the Nation,” an exclusive multi-part series addressing the national obesity epidemic at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, in Memorial Hall at the Milton Hershey School. “The Weight of the Nation,” comprises four documentary films featuring case studies and interviews with leading experts, and with families and individuals who struggle with obesity.

This particular screening will feature part three of the series called “Children in Crisis.” Childhood obesity is much more than a cosmetic concern. The health consequences of childhood obesity include greater risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and other serious illnesses. The combination of these health effects and the dramatic increase in childhood obesity rates over the past three decades causes some experts to fear this may be the first generation of American children who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
