Penn State Hershey honors outstanding community service efforts

The Penn State Hershey Community Service Team recently recognized the outstanding efforts of faculty, staff, students, volunteers and community members who have used their personal skills and expertise to demonstrate exceptional service to local and global communities. This year’s award winners include:

-- Dr. Robert Vender, associate professor of medicine and pulmonary medicine specialist – a dedicated advocate for cystic fibrosis patients

-- Dr. Ian Schreibman, gastroenterologist – a dedicated provider of medical care at the Bethesda Mission Clinic in Harrisburg

-- Tammi Bortner, manager, Resuscitation Sciences Training Center – innovator in delivering hands-only CPR demonstrations to the community

-- Deb Tregea, senior exercise physiologist and campus wellness coordinator – an unyielding wellness advocate

-- Marjorie Lebo, nurse practitioner, surgery – a tireless fundraiser who’s raised more than $70,000 for colon cancer prevention

-- HealthSlam – a creative and innovative group of second year medical students providing healthy lifestyle messages to school-age children

-- Laurie Gonzalez, nurse – a health advocate bringing wellness messaging and fresh produce to underserved populations

-- Kathy Miller, 2013 AFF Fashion Show chair – a volunteer philanthropist whose year-long event planning efforts resulted in the highest earning fashion show in Association of Faculty & Friends history

-- Rik Rhoades, 445 Foundation – a devoted father and philanthropist who has raised more than $80,000 for Children’s Miracle Network

-- Life Lion staff – dedicated employees who’ve encouraged high school students to make smarter driving decisions through more than 70 mock driving under the influence demonstrations in the last 10 years

-- Mike and Doris Balas, hospital volunteers – dedicated husband and wife volunteer team that has logged more than 12,600 volunteer hours serving Penn State Hershey

-- Denny Brenckle – a tireless volunteer advocate serving as chair of For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Hershey Medical Center and a member of Penn State Hershey Medical Center’s Board of Directors
