Farmers Market in Hershey receives national recognition

The Farmers Market in Hershey has been voted the No. 1 most celebrated market in Pennsylvania, and one of the Top 100 Most Celebrated Farmers Markets in America for 2013.

The honors came from this summer’s American Farmland Trust’s I Love My Farmers Market Celebration. The program helped to raise national awareness about local farmers markets and putting money directly in the pockets of family farmers. Throughout the celebration, consumers were encouraged to pledge to spend $10 at their local farmers markets. The Farmers Market in Hershey had the highest amount of people pledging in the state for a total of $850.

Not only did the pledges help the Farmers Market in Hershey earn national recognition — it also helped the community. For every $10 spent on local food, as much as $7.80 is re-spent in the local community, supporting local jobs and businesses. Also, the farmer takes home almost $8 to $9 instead of the $1.58 that farmers and ranchers receive when food is purchased through a retail market.

There are still four more Thursdays for the Farmers Market left in the season. Market hours are 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., and vendors offer locally produced fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats, baked goods and other specialty items such as herbs and spices, flowers, cider and honey.
