General Stores adopts Green Tuesday & Thursday initiative to save mileage, money

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- As part of the University’s continued commitment to instituting environmentally responsible business practices, General Stores is implementing a Green Tuesday & Thursday initiative at Penn State. Beginning Oct. 1, office supplies will be delivered three days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) to all Penn State campuses.

The decision to transition from the current four-day delivery schedule was based on customer feedback from a survey in April. Nearly 70 percent of customers supported a three-day delivery schedule.

The Green Tuesday & Thursday initiative offers a variety of environmental benefits. The mileage saved per year by eliminating two days of delivery per week exceeds the circumference of the Earth. In addition, General Stores’ carbon footprint will be reduced by 57,160 pounds annually (equivalent to removing 220 cars from the road or planting almost 9,000 trees), and will save about 3,000 gallons of fuel per year. It is hoped the change in schedule will lead to a consolidation of orders effectively reducing the amount of boxes and packaging materials used, will help improve efficiency and save the University money.

Customers should note that janitorial products and cylinder gases will continue to be delivered daily, Monday to Friday.
