Several blood drives planned for September

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- In response to low blood inventory levels, the American Red Cross will hold multiple blood drives in September at Penn State.

During the semester, those who donate will get automatically entered to win a Donor of the Game football package. Donors of the Game will be selected for the 2013 Michigan, Illinois, Purdue and Nebraska games. Packages include club seat tickets to the game, pre-game hospitality passes, a sideline visit during the game, radio recognition during the pre-game broadcast and Beaver Stadium video board recognition. For more information, visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/bleedblue.

Eligible donors with type O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative blood are especially encouraged to give double-red cells where available. Double-red cell donation is done with the help of an apheresis machine that collects red cells from the donor but returns most of the plasma and platelets along with sterile saline. This donation allows you to give two 200ml units of red cells, leaving you more hydrated than when you started. A normal donation takes 500ml; a double red donation takes only 400ml but gives back 500ml of saline. Plus, the needle is smaller. Inventory levels will increase faster with this type of donation.
