Media Education Foundation documentaries available to Penn State community

Films available streaming online

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Individuals with a Penn State Access ID can now stream online Media Education Foundation's (MEF) high-quality titles, including the very popular “Killing Us Softly” series, “Tough Guise” and “Dreamworlds 3.” MEF produces and distributes documentary films and other educational resources to inspire critical thinking about the social, political and cultural impact of American mass media. New titles will be added to the streaming platform as they are released by MEF. A full list of titles in the collections can be viewed at pennstate.kanopystreaming.com/s-homepage.

The MEF films are available through a three-year license purchased by the University Libraries and are an important addition to the streaming videos offered by the Libraries. While most of the films are available in the Libraries through multiple DVD and VHS copies, they are heavily used, and online access makes it easier for faculty and students to view the films. Faculty can even embed the links in Angel, clip edit and create playlists to email to students. Additionally a playback function automatically adjusts the stream based on the speed of the Internet connection.

MEF Films, along with a growing number of streaming films, can be accessed:-- through the Databases A-Z list (Media Education Foundation is under M)-- from Streaming Video Resources

Plans are also under way to add the titles to The CAT, the Libraries online catalog, and although the titles are not currently captioned, this functionality will be added later this fall.
