Sponsors support Alumni Golf Scramble

Two companies signed on as the official sponsors of the Alle-Kiski Society’s 14th annual Alumni Golf Scramble that teed up Aug. 9, at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo, Pa.

Westmoreland Insurance Services/Burrell Group Inc. in New Kensington was “The Pride” tournament sponsor. Industrial Automation and Control Inc., a Freeport company that provides engineering solutions for control system problems, was the “For the Future” dinner sponsor, as well as the “Roaring Lion” beverage cart sponsor.

In addition to the official sponsors, 19 individuals and businesses supported the event with tee sponsorships. A field of 18 foursomes helped raise funds for the society's endowed scholarship. For the first time in the history of the event, a team successfully defended its title. DJ Double K came in at 11-under, two shots clear of the runner-up, the Magnificent Salems.

Headed by Kerry Kelly, immediate past president of the alumni society, DJ Double K earned its third title in five years. The victors, Chris Broberg, Charles Wall, Cory Stump and Kelly, shot 15-under a year ago. They captured the crown in 2009 with a 14-under. The tournament scoring record of 16-under was established in 2011 by Minuteman Press-Hyde Park.

The Magnificent Salems were captained by Bill Salem, who founded the alumni tournament in 2000 when he was president of the society. The team featured Tony Males, Rich Lednak and Todd Armstrong.

Proceeds from the scramble are earmarked for the Alle-Kiski Society Endowed Scholarship at Penn State New Kensington that funds yearly awards to campus undergraduates. This year, the society will award $3,600 in scholarships. Since 1998, $40,000 has been awarded to 48 students.
