Cross country announces 2013 schedule

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Director and Head Coach of Nittany Lion Track and Field/Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan and the Nittany Lion cross country squads have finalized their 2013 schedule, which is set to include two high-caliber home competitions at the Blue-White Golf Course. With two outstanding teams set for action this fall, the Nittany Lions will hope to end their seasons at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, set for late November, at Indiana State University.

As has become an annual tradition, the Nittany Lions will back the short trip to Lock Haven University to start the season, competing at the Dolan Duals on Friday, Sept. 6. The Blue and White will return home the following weekend, hosting the always competitive Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday, Sept.13. The Invitational, which is named in honor of former longtime Nittany Lion men's coach Harry Groves, is set to feature both collegiate and high school races.

Following a weekend off, the Nittany Lions will face their first major test of the season at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University on Saturday, Oct. 5. Along with facing tough competition from around the country, the Penn State harriers will also get the chance to preview the same course they will take on for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, as the Lehigh is slated to also serve as the regional host.

The Nittany Lions will then split squads between the Penn State National on the Blue-White Golf Course, and the Pre-National Invitational at Indiana State for their final regular season competition of 2013. The PSU National is set for Friday, Oct. 18, with the pre-national competition following on Saturday, Oct. 19. The trip to Terre Haute will serve as a course preview for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November.

The Blue and White will then hit the postseason trail, heading to Purdue for the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Nov. 3. The Nittany Lions will be back at Lehigh for the 2013 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships - where the Nittany Lion women are the defending regional champions - on Friday, Nov. 15. All roads will then lead to the NCAA Cross Country Championships at Indiana State on Saturday, Nov. 23.
