UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State's iconic Nittany Lion Shrine, currently undergoing renovations to improve lighting, accessibility and landscaping, will temporarily be available during Summer Commencement weekend at the University Park campus.

The shrine will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, through Sunday, Aug. 11.

Students and visitors are asked to observe all safety measures that are in place, since the site is still undergoing construction. The area will be accessible from the sidewalk near the small parking lot located west of the shrine.

Barricades and auxiliary police officers will direct all visitors. The area and surrounding construction fence will be made secure at 8 p.m. daily.

After Aug. 11, access to the shrine will again be restricted. The target completion date for the project is Sept. 6, depending on weather and other variables that can impact the progress of the work.

Penn State's class of 2012 voted to enhance the area surrounding the statue as its senior gift. The shrine itself is a gift of the class of 1940.
