Family, friends carry on vision of Penn College supporter

The family of the late Ryan and Karen English recently delivered a check to Pennsylvania College of Technology to be added to a scholarship fund started in 2011 by Ryan in support of students in the electronics and computer engineering technology majors.

The Ryan and Karen English Marcellus Measurement Scholarship will provide perpetual annual awards. Ryan English established the fund after working with faculty and students in the academic program at the college.

At the time, Ryan indicated he was impressed with Penn College’s commitment to “helping students understand what it takes to be a part of the workforce after school is finished and providing a real-world environment for the students who attend.”

His hope was to continue to grow the relationship with students through the scholarship fund and to provide input into the curriculum as a result of his experiences in the natural gas workforce. His goal was to fully endow the scholarship fund through proceeds generated by natural gas industry participants in an annual golf outing.

Tragically, Ryan and his wife, Karen, were killed in an automobile accident in early March.

Family and friends want to continue Ryan English’s dream of having a permanent source of scholarship funding at Penn College. They picked up where Ryan left off and planned the third annual Marcellus Masters golf tournament at Tyoga Country Club in Wellsboro. A portion of the proceeds from the May 11 event have provided funding to help bring Ryan’s dream to fruition.

“The world lost two amazing individuals who exemplified the importance of family and community,” said Debra M. Miller, director of corporate relations at Penn College. “Ryan and Karen left us way too early, creating a void in the hearts of many, including those of us at Penn College who knew and admired them. The efforts of family and friends to carry on Ryan’s vision provide a true testament to the values by which Karen and Ryan lived.”
