Collaborative Hershey and University Park medical service trip

This spring brought the first collaborative spring break service trip for University Park undergraduates and Hershey medical students and physicians. From March 2 to 9, the team of two physicians, eight medical students, and 32 undergraduates served in the Darien province of Panama -- an area reputed as a jungle ridden with malaria and yellow fever.

During the weeklong trip, the team provided much-needed medical services through the Global Brigades organization by establishing a medical clinic in El Tirao. Operating out of a local elementary school, the clinic provided care to more than 300 Panaminians. There, the team could check vital signs, conduct patient interviews and exams, provide oral care, perform diagnostic tests and dispense drugs to patients.
