Ten elected, three appointed to serve on Alumni Association's governing board

Thirteen alumni will begin three-year terms on the Penn State Alumni Association’s governing body, Alumni Council, beginning July 1.

New members elected to serve on Alumni Council, along with their vote totals, are Susan McNulty-Atwater (4,978), Katie Bartoo (4,555), Sally Hornick Anderson (4,497), Joan M. McLane (4,311), Kenneth Haas Jr. (4,001), Susan Ingram Martin (3,734), Thomas Range (3,699), Johanna Ramos (3,624), Todd Dietrich (3,383) and Kathy Kasperik (3,371). Each of these 10 alumni will serve a three-year term from July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2016.

Three additional alumni have been appointed by incoming Alumni Association President Kay Frantz Salvino, ’69, to serve on Alumni Council, as required by the Alumni Association’s bylaws. The three appointees are Willie J. DeShields, Cynthia Hamlin and Carl Rosenberger.

Alumni Council is an all-volunteer governing body that advises and guides the Penn State Alumni Association. The council advises on strategies and programs to be carried out by the Alumni Association staff and is also responsible for electing the Alumni Association president and vice president. The Alumni Council election is conducted entirely online. Alumni members of the Penn State Alumni Association are eligible to vote. Of the 133,548 eligible voters, 9,445 voted, for a voting percentage of 7.07 percent. The turnout this year is a slight decrease from last year’s participation of 8.06 percent. The election was administered and results were certified by Votenet Solutions Inc., of Washington, D.C.

Following is a brief biography about each newly elected and appointed Alumni Council member:

Sally Hornick Anderson, Winnetka, Ill.; A 1998 graduate of the College of Health and Human Development, Anderson is a human resources manager for Google Inc. This is her second elected term on Alumni Council. She previously served as vice chair of the Membership Committee.

Katie Bartoo, Orlando, Fla.; A 1992 graduate of the College of the Liberal Arts, Bartoo is a senior construction litigation paralegal for Broad and Cassel. This is her second elected term on Alumni Council. She previously served as vice chair of the Volunteer Support Committee.

Willie J. DeShields, Philadelphia; A 1979 graduate of the College of Arts and Architecture, DeShields is a construction manager for New Jersey Transit Corp. This is his first appointed term on Alumni Council.

Todd Dietrich, Bethlehem, Pa.; A 2004 graduate of the College of Information Sciences and Technology, Dietrich is a senior application specialist for Weidenhammer. This is his first elected term on Alumni Council, having served since 2010 as the representative from the Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society. He previously served on the Volunteer Support Committee.

Kenneth Haas Jr., Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; A 1980 graduate of the College of the Liberal Arts, Hass is an airline pilot captain for Delta Air Lines. This is his second elected term on Alumni Council. He previously served on the Program Development and Diversity committees.

Cynthia Hamlin, Toronto; A 1995 graduate of the Smeal College of Business, Hamlin is a financial consultant for Investors Group Financial Services. This is her first appointed term on Alumni Council.

Kathy Kasperik, Pittsburgh; A 1992 graduate of the College of Health and Human Development, Kasperik is a fellowship coordinator for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Physician Services Division. This is her first elected term on Alumni Council.

Susan Ingram Martin, York, Pa.; A 1968 graduate of the College of Education, Martin is a retired educator, reading specialist and Title I Facilitator for the School District of Lancaster. This is her second elected term on Alumni Council, where she previously served on the Membership Committee.

Joan M. McLane, Los Angeles; A 1994 graduate of the College of the Liberal Arts, McLane is a senior clinical administrator for the University of Southern California Institute of Urology. This is her second elected term on Alumni Council, where she previously served as vice chair of the Awards Committee.

Susan McNulty-Atwater, Barker, N.Y.; A 1999 graduate of the College of Engineering, McNulty-Atwater is a senior food process and utilities project engineer for General Mills Inc. This is her second elected term on Alumni Council. She previously served on the Communications Committee.

Johanna Ramos, Herndon, Va.; A 1992 and 1999 graduate of the College of Engineering, Ramos is a senior aerospace systems engineer for Scitor Corp. This is her third elected term on Alumni Council; she also served an appointed term beginning in 2002. Previously, Ramos has served on the Program Development, Nominating, Volunteer Support and Diversity committees, as well as on the Executive Board.

Thomas Range, Levittown, Pa.; A 1989 graduate of the College of Science, Range is a math and computer teacher in the Council Rock School District. This is his third term on Alumni Council. Previously, he served on the Development and Executive committees.

Carl Rosenberger, Mohnton, Pa.; A 1981 graduate of the College of the Liberal Arts, Rosenberger is a sales coordinator of Business Weekly for the Reading Eagle Co. This is his first appointed term on Alumni Council. Previously he served as the representative from the Penn State Schuylkill Alumni Society.
