Alumnus Ron Baxter uses three degrees to get the job done

Penn State New Kensington alumnus Ron Baxter has taken higher education to the third degree.

Baxter, who earned an associate degree in mechanical engineering technology in 1991, keeps up with the latest industry trends by mastering new skills that help his employer remain competitive in the precision components field. The J.V. Manufacturing Co. designs and develops stamping dies for worldwide customers.

Hired as a mechanical engineer after graduation, Baxter shifted his focus two years later to the Information Technology department, which provides computer hardware, software and network development support. As systems administrator working under Russell Hirtz, manager of information systems, Baxter helped implement a system to monitor, protect and customize production.

With an eye on future roles inside the company, Baxter increased his knowledge of the business with two additional degrees. A bachelor’s degree in professional leadership from Duquesne University honed his managerial skills. As he began to take on more electronic projects, an associate degree in computer and electronics technology from ITT Technical Institute provided the framework for the electronics side of the ledger.

“I always had the desire to continue learning and take on new skills as technology progresses,” said Baxter, who is also a certified electrician. “Penn State New Kensington enabled me to begin a career as a mechanical engineer and, ultimately, led to my current position, which mixes mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and information technology.”

While matriculating at the campus, Baxter earned membership on the dean’s list and was inducted into two honor societies -- Tau Alpha Pi and Alpha Sigma Lambda. The Natrona Heights resident remains connected to the campus and community. He is on the board of the engineering program’s Industrial Advisory Committee, and he is the online chair for Highlands Relay for Life.
