Penn State Berks wins first-ever NEAC Presidents' Cup

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. -- For the first time in school history, the Penn State Berks athletics department won the prestigious North Eastern Athletic Conference Presidents' Cup, which is awarded to the top overall sports program in the conference. The Nittany Lions took home first place in the women’s standings and finished in fifth place on the men’s side.

"This afternoon, I had the honor of accepting the NEAC Women's and Overall Presidents' Cups on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and administrators," said Director of Athletics Lisa Deibler on May 29. "2012-2013 was an amazing year for the Penn State Berks athletics program. The institutional, conference, regional and national accomplishments of our individuals and teams were numerous and impressive. I am so very proud of our student-athletes and coaches. My heart is full."

The award is presented annually at the NEAC May Retreat, and is based on a points system aggregating a school’s combined level of success throughout all the sports in which the institution competes.

The Nittany Lions were able to capture the conference award after the men’s and women’s teams combined to earn 80 out of a possible 107 points for a .747 winning percentage. Penn State Abington finished second with a winning percentage of .641, followed by Keuka College with a .629 percentage for third place. State University of New York Institute of Technology (.623), winner of the last three Presidents' Cup and Morrisville State College (.589) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Women’s soccer, softball and women’s tennis were each winners of the regular-season to help the women’s side to the top finish. Women’s cross-country finished in second place at the NEAC Championship and received 11 out of a possible 12 points, while volleyball finished in third place in the regular season standings to collect 10.5 points out of 13. The women’s team had a .905 winning percentage, finishing well ahead of second place Keuka (.754).

The men’s basketball team earned all five points offered after winning the South Division title for the first time in program history. Baseball and golf finished in third place, while men’s tennis and men’s cross-country both finished in fourth place. Overall, the men had a total of 27.5 points out of 49 for a .561 winning percentage.

"We at Penn State Berks are so proud and excited for our student-athletes and their coaches who have brought the Presidents' Cup to our College for the first time." said Chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk. "This accomplishment reflects dedication and hard work on the part of all of our athletic teams, and we celebrate this milestone with them and congratulate them on their achievement."

The Nittany Lions had placed fifth overall in six of the last seven years and the previous best finish was third place in 2007-08. There have only been three institutions to take home the Presidents' Cup since its inception in 2005-06. Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) won the first two years, followed by Keuka (2007-08, 2008-09) and then the three-year run by SUNYIT.

The complete results for all three NEAC Presidents' Cups are as follows:
