Penn State Harrisburg to host health education conference June 18 to 20

The Keystone Health Promotion Conference, hosted by Penn State Harrisburg, will explore all areas of health and personal wellness for health promotion professionals and will feature three nationally renowned keynote speakers. The conference will be held at the college from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 18 to 20 with social activities on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

During the three-day conference intended for health educators, nurses, physical education teachers, school counselors and worksite health promotion practitioners, participants will learn practical skills in areas ranging from chronic disease to nutrition that are easily incorporated into work and classroom programs. The conference’s interactive workshops, guest speakers and physical activities will help participants advance their wellness programs.

Keynote presentations by leading health policy advocates are:

-- “A Healthier America 2013” – Richard Hamburg, deputy director of Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), has brought insight to TFAH’s public policy initiatives, advocacy campaigns and internal operations for more than 25 years. He will present recommendations for American health improvement.

-- “Nutrition Education through Entertainment: A Rock 'n’ Rolls Approach to Communicating Your Healthy Message” – Jill Jayne, creator of the nutrition show "Jump with Jill" and “an expert in creating and delivering interactive media about health to kids and families,” will explore new ways to use entertainment in health education

-- “H.O.P.E. How Other Possibilities Emerge” – Gina Calhoun, national director of wellness and recovery education for the Copeland Center for Wellness Recovery and a certified peer specialist, will provide an inspirational look at her personal journey through the mental health recovery process.

Also at the conference, local school personnel utilizing Fuel Up to Play 60! (FUTP60), a program aimed at empowering students to make small, everyday health changes, will examine successes and challenges of the program’s implementation.
