Women's rugby claims second consecutive national championship

Information from USA Rugby

The Penn State women’s rugby team claimed its second consecutive USA Rugby National Championship with a 65-10 victory over Norwich University on Saturday (May 4) at Stanford’s Steuber Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.

The title is the program’s eighth overall and fourth in the past five years. Sophomore prop Hope Rogers earned the game’s MVP award for her leadership in the pack and three tries in the game.

Eight Penn State players carried the ball over the try line.  Seven of those tries came from forwards who played a dominant game in both the scrums and the open field, including a five meter scrum which they drove in for a try in the first half.

Despite the score, Norwich gave Penn State trouble with damaging runs and fierce competition in contact.  Norwich scored two tried in the first 40 minutes, but by the second half Penn State’s defense and Norwich’s own knock-ons left the title in the hands of the defending champions.
