Smeal College of Business recognizes outstanding student organizations

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- At an annual Penn State Smeal College of Business student organization awards dinner last month, seven groups were recognized for leadership, outreach, corporate partnerships and more. The event also featured keynote speaker Anthony Buzzelli, a 1971 Smeal accounting graduate.

The Bridge Builder Award went to the Smeal Student Mentors, a group that mentors first-year students in academic and social transitions into Penn State.

The Bridge Builder Award recognizes an organization that has demonstrated the ability to connect students, faculty and staff, and has shown the ability to support various people and projects they represent.

The Penn State Finance Society earned the Civic Enrichment Award for its work with the One Heart Campaign, the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon and Centre County PAWS.

The Civic Enrichment Award recognizes an organization with outstanding commitment to service and engagement in the community.

The Penn State Marketing Association won the Corporate Involvement Award for its success in organizing the Marketing Career Fair, which had increased company attendance this year of 250 percent.

The Corporate Involvement Award recognizes the overall quality of a past event that included corporate participation.

The Most Collaborative Organization Award went to Women in Business for the work it did with other student organizations like the Multicultural Women’s Forum, Smeal Student Mentors, the Sapphire Leadership Program, Professional Golf Management, Power of Pink and MBA Women International.

The Most Collaborative Organization Award recognizes an organization that has worked with a variety of different organizations in co-sponsoring programs throughout the year.

The Professional Management Association won the Most Innovative Program Award for its new Project Management Program, which gives students a chance to manage projects for local businesses or other student organizations.

The Most Innovative Program Award recognizes a new program or project undertaken by an organization that enhanced the organizational activities.

The Most Improved Organization Award went to co-winners the Management Information Systems Association (MISA) and ASCEND, a group that promotes leadership and development in Asian and Pacific Island students pursuing careers in finance or accounting.

  •  MISA developed an ambassadors program with the mission of educating younger students on the MIS major, made many new corporate contacts and developed a system to track their membership.
  •  ASCEND increased its membership from 46 students to 120 students, increased its number of corporate events and developed a successful mentoring program within the organization.

The Most Improved Organization Award recognizes an organization that has made general improvements or has been restructured for the better.
