Women's golf selected to NCAA Regional at Auburn

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State women's golf team qualified for the NCAA Championships and will begin play in the East Regional hosted by Auburn University. This is the first time since the 2002-03 season that the team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Penn State earned the 16th seed out of 24 teams attending the regional site. The East Regional will be played at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Alabama. Tournament action begins May 9 and continues through May 11.

Head Coach Denise St. Pierre voiced optimism on the news of her team making Nationals stating, "It feels great to know that all of the hard work and dedication this team made to working towards the process to being better every day is well worth it. We need to play three solid rounds of golf to move on, but it is certainly possible."

The top five teams in the East Regional along with their rankings from Golfstat include, Alabama (1), Arkansas (35), UCLA (2), North Carolina (7), and Virginia (17).

The individuals competing in the East Regional include, Natalie Willie of Augusta State, Kelly Shon of Princeton, Casey Kennedy of Augusta State, Isabel Southard of Boston College, Shu-Yin Liu of Tulsa, and Kristina Merkie of Tulsa.

Six other Big Ten schools also made the NCAA Tournament, including Northwestern (10), Michigan State (9), Indiana (17), Wisconsin (20), Purdue (4), and Ohio State (13). Of these six teams, only Northwestern is joins Penn State in the East Regional bracket.

Seventy-two teams qualified for the NCAA Championships along with 18 individuals. Of these teams and individuals, eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional to the championships finals, which is being held at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The championships final is scheduled to begin on May 21.
