Outstanding IST Alumni Award marks milestone

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- In commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of its first graduating class, Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) has established the Penn State Outstanding IST Alumni Award to recognize graduates who have reached exceptional levels of professional achievement. The award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the College of IST.

“Fourteen years ago, IST opened its doors, and 10 years ago, we welcomed our first full class of graduates into the real world,” said Paul Horn, president of the IST Alumni Society. “This 10-year anniversary is monumental, and shows the longevity and impact that the IST program has had.”

Horn, a 2004 IST graduate, is the HP/Microsoft Private Cloud Sales Manager for the Americas at HP.

The purpose of the Penn State IST Alumni Society Award is to recognize and reward outstanding IST alumni for their success as leaders in their professional field and for the impact they have had and will continue to have on society and their profession. Any person may be nominated who is an alumni of the Penn State College of IST. Eligibility for the award is limited to individuals who have graduated from the University at least 10 years prior. Eligible candidates should have a record of professional achievements, which are widely recognized for their quality and significance. Recipients of the award shall be selected by a committee appointed by the dean of the College of IST.

The title Outstanding IST Alumnus/Alumna, a permanent designation, shall be conferred upon each recipient of the Award by the dean of the College of IST. The Outstanding IST Alumni awardees will be asked to return to campus to receive their awards and to interact in specific and significant ways with College of IST students, faculty and alumni.

The nomination deadline for the 2013 Penn State Outstanding IST Alumni Award is Tuesday, April 22. The recipient will be honored at an award luncheon on June 2 at The Nittany Lion Inn, during the College of IST’s Traditional Reunion Weekend.

According to Horn, the College of IST has opened doors for many graduates who have parlayed their educational backgrounds into substantial careers.

“Seeing where our alumni have gone, and what they have done in their careers to date, it is clear that this foundation was essential as part of their success,” he said. “Our alumni continue to raise the bar, and set the example in industry, government and academia.”
