UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Richard Alley, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at Penn State, will present "Rising Seas, Warming Planet: Lessons from Antarctica" at this week's Research Unplugged series on Thursday, April 11, at 12:15 p.m. in Schlow Centre Region Library's Downsbrough Community Room.
Research Unplugged is in its ninth year of bringing together a broad range of Penn State researchers and the State College community for informal conversation.
Alley is the recipient of many prestigious career awards. In recent years, he served as one of the authors on the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2008, awarded the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 2009, hosted a PBS special on climate change and sustainable energy titled "Earth: The Operators' Manual," and received a Heinz Award for being a leader in climate and polar ice studies in 2011.
Most recently he was the recipient of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Public Engagement in Science Award for "his decades-long, broad-based and exceptionally effective efforts communicating the best of climate science to excite the interests of the general public and policy makers."
