11 compete in Penn College cake competition

 

Winners were named in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s annual cake competition, sponsored by CalJava International.

First place among the 11 competitors was awarded to Ching Chan, a first-year student in the college’s baking and pastry arts major, for a cake that featured intricate hand piping. Chan resides in Milton and also received the People’s Choice Award, chosen by visitors to the competition.

The second-place cake – decorated in delicate cherry blossoms – was designed by Carrie A. Williams, of State College.

Third place went to Tanna M. Brewer, of Linden, for her wedding dress-inspired cake.

Judges for the “Spring Wedding”-themed competition were Kim Morrison, two-time Grand Prize winner of the National Wedding Cake Competition and owner of Cakes for Occasions in Spring Mills, and Jennifer Eckert, who earned degrees in baking and pastry arts and technology management from Penn College.

Daniel Budiman, a renowned cake decorator and owner of CalJava International, a cake decorating supply company, devised the competition after twice visiting Penn College to offer demonstrations to baking and pastry arts classes. He sponsors prizes for the winners to encourage the students to continue developing their budding decorating skills.

Donations from People’s Choice Award voting were given to the Williamsport YWCA’s Liberty House, a bridge-housing program for Lycoming County women (and women with children) who are homeless.

The cakes will be displayed on the first floor of the college’s Madigan Library through April 12. They will then be entered in the Pennsylvania ICES (International Cake Exploration Societé) 33rd annual Cake Show, which runs April 13 and 14 at the Nittany Mall in State College.
