Greater Allegheny Campus Choir to sing in historic event

The Penn State Greater Allegheny A Cappella Melody Lions will participate in the Music for the Spirit Festival, to be held at 7:30 p.m. on April 20, at the University of Pittsburgh’s Petersen Events Center.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will open the inaugural festival with “Singing City,” a large-scale, historic concert event. Joining Music Director Manfred Honeck and the orchestra will be an ensemble of over 2,500 voices from the Pittsburgh region, including the Melody Lions. Doretta Whalen, adjunct instructor of music and director of the choir, will sing, along with students: soprano Yi Wen; altos Brittany Boucher, Courtney Handlovitch, Deziree Holyfield and Christina Moriarty; tenor Tim Tolbert; and basses Mike Mattis, and Kenneth Delgado Smith.

Repertoire highlights include the Chorale Finale of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 Resurrection, as well as the world premiere of a newly commissioned work for a cappella choir by Pittsburgh native, Jonny Priano.
