Weidner named recipient of Barash Award for Human Service

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Joel Weidner, director of auxiliary and business services information systems and marketing, is the 2013 recipient of the Barash Award for Human Service.

Created in 1975 by the family of the late Sy Barash, the award honors a full-time member of the faculty or staff or student body on the University Park campus who, apart from his or her regular duties, has contributed the most to human causes, public service activities and organizations, or the welfare of fellow humans.

Weidner is being recognized for his work with the University Mennonite Church and the Park Forest Day Nursery Preschool. “There is no doubt that Joel has selflessly contributed to bettering the human condition,” a nominator said. “Joel is a thoughtful, intelligent, ethical person who cares about this world and all of those who inhabit it.”

He has been an active member of the University Mennonite Church for more than 30 years, currently serving on the leadership team as the congregational chair. He also serves as media outreach committee chair, Webmaster, student ministry committee member and fair-trade coffee coordinator. One nominator recognized him as being “always ready to lend a hand to a neighbor in need, to provide a word of encouragement and support, and to willingly engage in ways that make our community a great place to live.”

He serves on the board of directors and as treasurer of the Park Forest Day Nursery Preschool, which offers tuition-free education to at-risk children, preparing them for a successful start in kindergarten. “Joel has drastically transformed the day nursery’s financial status from a small operation where checks were hand written and bookkeeping was ledgered in an old-fashioned notebook” to a computerized financial system supported by a financial committee, a nominator said.

Weidner also coordinates the Website of the State College Highlands Civic Association and bikes to work every day to minimize his carbon footprint.
