Basso promoted to vice president for Human Resources

HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State's Board of Trustees today (March 15) approved the promotion of Susan McGarry Basso to the position of vice president for Human Resources. Basso joined Penn State as associate vice president for Human Resources in December 2010

In her new capacity, Basso will continue her current reporting line to Senior Vice President for Finance and Business David Gray. She also will provide regular briefings to Penn State President Rodney Erickson on important matters in the area of human resources policies, procedures and emerging issues.

"Ms. Basso was hired for her current position following a national search, having served as the chief human resource officer at two other universities prior to her arrival at Penn State," Erickson said. "An executive search firm that specializes in filling finance and business vacancies advised that we were unlikely to find a better candidate by repeating a search. I believe she is exceptionally deserving of this promotion."

Basso’s leadership experience in human resources management extends into the areas of benefits administration, recruitment and compensation, training and development, performance management, organizational development, and systems and payroll. She was the chief human resources officer at Seton Hall University from 2006 to 2010 and has more than 20 years of leadership experience in all areas of human resources management. Before her appointment at Seton Hall University, Basso spent 18 years at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania in a variety of roles, ultimately as director of human resource management.

Basso also has served as an independent consultant to several community organizations, including Monroe County Head Start, United Steel Products and Wayne Memorial Hospital, and has been active in CUPA-HR, the organization of higher education human resources professionals. She served as the president of CUPA-HR's New York Metro Chapter and received the organization's Eastern Region Emerging Leader Award in 2007.
