Altoona commits to helping veterans find jobs

Penn State Altoona’s Enactus team will work with the Blair County Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Chamber of Commerce in the Hiring Our Heroes initiative.

Hiring Our Heroes is a hiring fair for veteran job seekers, active duty military, members of the National Guard and reserve components, as well as military spouses. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon April 10, at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona.

On March 30, Enactus will hold a workshop from 9 a.m. to noon at the Sheetz Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence in downtown Altoona to help prepare veterans for the fair. Topics include resume writing, effective networking, dressing for success and interviewing. Veterans will leave with five copies of their resume and a polished elevator pitch on themselves.

Further, Enactus will host a "warm-up" booth at Hiring Our Heroes where veterans can practice their elevator pitch before entering the fair. The workshops are part of Enactus’ New Beginnings project. Similar workshops are held with the specialty courts of Blair County and the Emergency Shelter of Family Services Inc.

Veterans may register for the March 30 workshop by contacting Judy Paul at 814-940-3400.
