Turkish newspaper columnist to present lectures at Penn State Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Turkish newspaper columnist Mustafa Akyol will be featured in a lecture series to be held March 12 and 13 at Penn State Altoona.

Akyol will present “Islam at a Crossroads" on March 12 at at 7:30 p.m. and “Turkey at a Crossroads” on March 13 at 7:30 p.m. Both lectures will be held at the Misciagna Family Center, 3600 Ivyside Drive, 1660, on the Altoona campus. 

There will be time reserved for questions and comments. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Mustafa Akyol is a columnist for two Turkish newspapers, Hürriyet Daily News and Star. His articles have also appeared in Foreign Affairs, Newsweek, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and many other publications. His book, "Islam without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty," an argument for "Muslim liberalism," was published by W.W. Norton in July 2011. The book was described by Financial Times as "a forthright and elegant Muslim defense of freedom."

The presentations are sponsored by The Elizabeth and George Gardner Fellowship in Political Science and the Political Science Program at Penn State Altoona.
