University Park Regional Medical Campus continues to grow in 2013

Inaugural cohort of regional campus medical students in second half of third-year clinical training

The first cohort of students at the University Park Regional Campus is in the second half of their third-year training. Thirteen Penn State medical students are learning from local Penn State Hershey faculty, Mount Nittany Physician Group and Mount Nittany Medical Center providers, as well as other community providers, in a variety of specialties.

Core clinical rotations include family medicine, primary care, medicine, neurology, psychiatry, OB/GYN, pediatrics and surgery.

Special congratulations to regional campus student Sarah Smith who recently received the third annual Community Service Award through Penn State College of Medicine. Sarah was recognized for her work with the Global Health Scholars Program and Penn State College of Engineering to create a site in Kenya for medical students to collaborate on a telemedicine project.

Six additional third-year medical students will join the regional campus this summer. The current cohort will become more involved in elective courses and internships in State College and across the region, in preparation for residency after the fourth year of medical school.

The University Park Regional Campus is developing a Family Medicine residency program in conjunction with Mount Nittany Health, and is currently recruiting a program director and coordinator for the program. The 65th annual Mount Nittany Medical Center Charity Ball, held Feb. 2 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, raised $125,000 to benefit the residency program development. The residency program will help fulfill the regional campus mission of ensuring an adequate primary care workforce for the future in central Pennsylvania.
