Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence announces upcoming events

The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence at Penn State has announced upcoming events.

-- Chas Brua, instructional consultant, and Lauren Kooistra, graduate consultant, both with the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will lead “Course in College Teaching -- Blended Altoona -- Spring 2013” on Tuesdays, Feb. 19 to April 9 at Penn State Altoona and online.

This offering will be taught in a blended learning format. This includes three, two-hour meetings scheduled on Feb. 26, March 19 and April 9 (a total of six hours face-to-face) at Penn State Altoona. Participants must attend at least two of these face-to-face meetings and participate in online activities to earn the CCT certificate. In addition to the meetings, a faculty member will need to complete four certificate assignments to earn the certificate. (There will be no online session March 6 - 11.)
Currently open to Penn State Altoona only.

-- Chas Brua, instructional consultant with the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, will lead “Best Practices for PowerPoint: Tips for Teachers” on from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in 315 Rider Building on the University Park campus and by Adobe Connect.

PowerPoint is one of the most commonly used technologies in teaching -- but in terms of promoting student learning, it’s often used less effectively than it might be. In this workshop, Brua will present current issues and research regarding the effective use of PowerPoint. Building on work by communication experts Edward Tufte, Jean-luc Doumont, and Penn State's Michael Alley, he will present and demonstrate simple but solid guidelines for effective slideshow design.

This session will be offered in a face-to-face format in 315 Rider Building, University Park, and via Adobe Connect: https://meeting.psu.edu/powerpoint/

Participants are free to bring their own beverages and lunch.
