Pattee Library exhibit remembers flood

On June 25, 1993, around 3 a.m., a 12-inch water main under Curtin Road on Penn State's University Park campus erupted with such force that asphalt and dirt spewed up from the road. Minutes later, 890,000 gallons of water rushed into Pattee Library, spreading into the Literature Room and into stack level 2; additional water broke through a window well, adding to the deluge, and cascaded down to stack level 1. The Libraries will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the disaster that nearly destroyed 30,000 books with a display in the Circulation area of Pattee Library through Dec. 19.
