Two earn women's soccer Scholar All-America status

University Park, Pa. -- Senior Penn State women's soccer standouts Joanna Lohman (Silver Spring, Md.) and Heidi Drummond (Littleton, Colo.) have been selected National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first team Scholar All-Americans.

Both two-time first team recipients of the honor, Lohman was last year's NSCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. If she wins the award again this season, she would become the first female player ever to do so in the award's history.

Lohman carries a 3.45 grade point average in business and is the only player on the Scholar All-America list that also is a finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy for the collegiate player of the year. She was recently named an NSCAA first team All-American and was first team all-Mid Atlantic Region. A first team CoSIDA Academic All-American, she was one of two athletes this year to earn the honor a record-setting three years in a row.

Lohman also is one of four finalists for the Collegiate Women's Sports Award for women's soccer. A central midfield, she put up incredible numbers en route to earning Big Ten Player of the Year honors and was this season's only unanimous selection for first team all-Big Ten honors. Netting 19 goals, including four in the postseason, Lohman added six assists and converted a team-high eight game-winning goals, which is a new Penn State senior season record.

A three-time All-American, Lohman is one of only three Penn Staters to earn the honor as many times, joining goalkeeper Emily Olesiuk and 2001 Hermann Trophy winner Christie Welsh. She finished in the top 10 of every Penn State career list: No. 5 all-time in goals scored (41), No. 2 in assists (37) and No. 4 in points (119).

A key to Penn State's success throughout her career, Drummond has a 3.97 grade point average in business management. A second-team all-Big Ten honoree, Drummond also finished her career in the Top 10 of every offensive list at Penn State: No. 23 in goals (56), No. 5 in assists (26) and No. 3 in points (138). She tallied 15 goals and 10 assists to finish third on the scoring charts this season for the Lions. Her six game-winning goals were second only to Lohman's eight. Drummond racked-up an amazing 13 points during Penn State's NCAA run, netting four goals and adding five assists.

The Penn State women's soccer team finished the 2003 season with a 19-3-3 record, its sixth-straight NCAA quarterfinal appearance, and its sixth-straight Big Ten championship. The Lions were ranked No. 6 in the final polls from the NSCAA, SoccerBuzz and SoccerTimes.
