Penn State Board of Trustees meets today; President Spanier's remarks
Penn State's Board of Trustees is holding its regular, bi-monthly meeting today (Jan. 23) on the University Park campus. In his opening remarks to the board, President Graham B. Spanier highlighted the University's recently approved 2003-2004 appropriation and provided a glimpse at next year's funding request from the state; outlined Penn State's innovative new online music service with Napster launched earlier this month; and reviewed recent faculty and student accomplishments, among other topics. He also thanked Edward Hintz, outgoing board chair, for his service to the University.

Baldwin is first African American woman to chair board
Cynthia A. Baldwin, judge in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, and James S. Broadhurst, chairman and chief executive officer of Eat'n Park Hospitality Group Inc., were elected chair and vice chair, respectively, of Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Jan. 23). Baldwin, the first African-American female judge elected to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, breaks ground at Penn State as well in becoming the first African-American woman to preside over the University's governing body.

Penn State Hershey Medical Center posts solid first half despite challenges
With a continued focus on its strategic plan for growth and positive change, the leadership of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine today (Jan. 23) informed Penn State University Trustees of its strong first-half performance, which included increased patient volumes, sound expense management and highly-competitive patient satisfaction scores compared to other teaching hospitals nationwide.

Arrow Lionheart patient added to transplant list
Gayle Snider, the first U.S. recipient of the Arrow LionHeart⢠heart assist device to be released from the hospital, has been added to the heart transplant list. "This a clear sign that the device has provided superb support for Gayle and allowed him to gain strength," said John P. Boehmer, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the Penn State Cardiovascular Center. "Gayle also has taken important steps to improve his health, such as quitting smoking, in order to be fit for the transplant list." On Jan 23, Snider, a 36-year-old man from York, Pa., celebrates seven months at home and eight months with the left ventricular assist device.

Penn State representatives discuss campus safety initiatives
In an informational report to Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Jan. 23), Vicky Triponey, vice president for Student Affairs, led a panel discussion regarding the University's ongoing efforts to monitor and address relationship and sexual violence on campus. Triponey told the board, "The Penn State community has come together to discuss how everyone can help to make our campus safe by looking out for each other and sending a clear message that violence is not acceptable at this University."

Web-based resources strengthen academic advising program
Penn State has come a long way from the days when all students went to one location to register for classes and relied upon tedious paper-based processes to make sure they were enrolled in the right courses. With the advent of Web-based technologies, students now can take active roles in working with advisers to direct their academic goals. To emphasize the importance of personal interaction, students must still meet one-on-one with their advisers, but Web-based resources have put more information at students' fingertips and can help them navigate more smoothly through their academic choices, Janis E. Jacobs, vice provost for undergraduate education and international programs, told the Board of Trustees today (Jan. 23).

Trustees get update on student recruitment, retention and graduation
In an informational report to the Board of Trustees today (Jan. 23), John Romano, vice provost and dean for Enrollment Management, and Eva Pell, vice president for research and dean of The Graduate School, discussed undergraduate and graduate student recruitment, retention and graduation rates. According to Romano, each undergraduate admissions recruitment cycle covers a period of about 20 months and admissions staff at each campus, as well as 782 trained alumni volunteers, work hard to recruit the best and the brightest undergraduates for all Penn State locations.

Trustees approve purchase of two small properties
Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Jan. 23) approved two property purchases of less than an acre each in College Township and Stone Valley to provide the University with future development opportunities. One property is an undeveloped 0.4-acre parcel bordering University Park lands in College Township. The other property is a 0.753-acre parcel bordering Penn State lands at the entrance to the University's Stone Valley Recreation Area and Experimental Forest, in Huntingdon County.

Architects appointed for projects at Medical Center, University Park
Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Jan. 23) approved the appointment of architects to design new student housing and a renovation and expansion of the Fitness Center at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and to design an addition to the Rec Hall Wrestling and Student Fitness Center on the University Park campus.

Dates set for election of trustees and 2005 meetings
The Penn State Board of Trustees today (Jan. 23) approved Thursday, May 13, as the date for the delegate election of agricultural trustees and for the counting of ballots in the alumni election of board members. The board also designated Friday, May 14, as the date of the election of business and industry trustees.
