Survey center assists in state study of childhood obesity

When Pennsylvania Health Secretary Calvin B. Johnson recently announced that 18 percent of the eighth graders who were studied in a recent assessment were overweight and another 17 percent are at risk of being overweight, he was using data collected by a Penn State Harrisburg research center. The assessment was done to determine the prevalence of overweight children and youth in Pennsylvania and in recognition of the growing national problem of childhood overweight and obesity. The assessment was conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Center for Survey Research at Penn State Harrisburg.
