ANGEL Day II: Call for presenters

Teaching and Learning with Technology, a division of Information Technology Services, is seeking faculty presenters for "ANGEL Day II: A Symposium of Faculty Examples," which will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 18 in Thomas and Wartik buildings, University Park.

This symposium is an opportunity for faculty members to share their experiences with the University's Course Management System, ANGEL, and the ways in which they use ANGEL in teaching and learning. Concurrent faculty presentations will take place throughout the day. The closing session will include a "stump the expert" period during which participants can ask their most challenging questions about ANGEL.

Participants interested in presenting at ANGEL Day II are asked to complete the online presenter's form at http://its.psu.edu/training/angel/ no later than March 22.

Maple Harvest Festival

The Maple Harvest Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27 and 28 at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center. Festival-goers can sample fresh maple syrup and indulge in an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Costumed interpreters will demonstrate how to tap sugar maple trees and boil down the sap to make syrup. Visitors also will learn to identify the maple tree and create a "spile" to tap into the tree. Other events will include music and entertainment, concessions, nature walks and live-animal presentations.

The festival will cost $5 per person for those age 6 and older. Shaver's Creek members will be admitted for free to the festival. The pancake breakfast will cost $4 per person, age 6 and over. A special breakfast for Shaver's Creek members will held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday, March 28. The cost is $3 per person for ages 6 and older.

Call for nominations: CLGBTE

The Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity in the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity is seeking nominations for membership.

The commission serves as an advisory group to the president on matters affecting the climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of the University community. Its purpose is to enhance a positive working and living environment for all members of the University community, regardless of sexual orientation. Members are appointed to serve three-year terms and include representation from all employee classifications, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Call for nominations: CORED

The Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity is seeking nominations and applications for positions effective on July 1.

Membership includes administrators, faculty, staff exempt, staff nonexempt, technical-service employees, and undergraduate and graduate students. Full members are appointed by the president to serve a four-year term, or in the case of students, until graduation. Associate members serve a one-year renewable term.

The commission is dedicated to enhancing diversity and actively seeks a broad base of nominations from all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Self- nominations are welcome.

Call for nominations: CFW

The Commission for Women is actively seeking a broad base of nominations for membership.

The commission is a forum for exchanging ideas that can translate into improved practices to support women at Penn State. Its membership represents every employment category: faculty, exempt and non-exempt staff, technical service and administrative, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. The University president appoints the members of the commission as an advisory group to recommend policies and programs to enhance the University's working and learning environments.

The commission is particularly seeking nominations from women whose cultural, racial or ethnic background would enrich the understanding of the needs and concerns of women throughout the University. Self-nominations are welcome.

Grant applications accepted

Children of Penn State or Penn College technical service or staff employees may apply for the 2004-2005 Steve A. Garban Grant-In-Aid.

Eligible students must be offered admission as first-year, full-time students at any University location or at the Pennsylvania College of Technology; must have demonstrated leadership and humanitarian qualities through extracurricular activities; and must have achieved or show promise of achieving academic success. This grant-in-aid, awarded to one first-year student, will be applied to room and board charges for two years, provided the student continues to meet all eligibility requirements.

To apply, eligible students must submit a letter of application that includes three parts: the student's name and Social Security number; the Penn State or Penn College staff employee's name and position; and a personal essay of no more than two typewritten pages that illustrates the student's leadership, humanitarian and academic merits. Letters of application will be accepted until April 30. The award recipient will be selected and announced in May.

Scholarship nomination

Faculty are encouraged to nominate sophomore or junior undergraduate students for the Astronaut and Mercury Seven Scholarships for the 2004-2005 academic year.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is dedicated to encouragement of outstanding young Americans to pursue careers in science and engineering, especially in fields with strong research and applied components.

Faculty who know a sophomore or junior well enough to identify a special drive or talent which foreshows a creative career leading to advancement of scientific knowledge and technology should encourage students to apply for nomination. Students may not apply directly for an Astronaut Scholarship Foundation award.

The nomination of the two final candidates is at the discretion of the campus selection committee. All nominees must be American citizens. For 2004-2005, the amount provided for a single renewable scholarship is $10,000.

Holiday announcement

Two official University holidays will occur this spring and summer — Memorial Day and Independence Day. The University will observe the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 31. Since July Fourth is on a Sunday, by policy the University will observe the Independence Day holiday on Monday, July 5. Therefore, July 4 will not be an official University holiday. Classes will not be in session on either May 31 or July 5.
