Papers works brought to light

"Interior," a pen and ink drawing by Stuart Frost (American, born 1925) is part of the permanent collection of the Palmer Museum of Art, University Park. It is being highlighted during the "Works on Paper Post-1945 Selections from the Permanent Collection" through Aug. 15 in the Special Exhibitions Gallery II.

One of the best-kept secrets of any art museum resides in its holdings of works on paper. Because they are light sensitive, prints, drawings, photographs and nearly every other work of art that employs paper as a support, spend most of their institutional lives tucked safely away in darkness. As a result, visitors at any given time rarely gain, at best, more than a mere glimpse of the full range of a museum's paper collection.

This summer, the Palmer Museum of Art provides more than just a peek with a major exhibition of modern and contemporary prints, drawings, pastels and watercolors selected from the permanent collection. Some have been on view several times over the last few years, and so will be recognized as old friends. Other pieces are being seen by museum visitors for the first time, either because they belong to a group of very recent acquisitions or because they have remained in storage for a long time.
