Doctor joins Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Gerald J. Harkins has joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine.

Harkins cares for women at University Physicians Group, Nyes Road, Harrisburg. He returns to Pennsylvania from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he served as assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

Harkins is a 1986 graduate of Penn State, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in health education and athletic training, and a 1996 graduate of Penn State College of Medicine, where he earned his medical doctorate. He completed his internship and residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash.

In December 2003, Harkins was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). He served as the chief of gynecology and he and his team provided care to more than 20,000 female service members deployed to Iraq. Harkins was awarded the OIF Expeditionary Medal in February. Since 1986, Harkins has served as a major with the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army, receiving the Army Commendation Medal three times and the Army Achievement Medal.
