Field hockey debuts at No. 19 in the STX/NFHCA national poll

The Penn State field hockey team is ranked No. 19 in the first national poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) in partnership with STX Field Hockey. The Lions are tied for the spot with fellow Big Ten rival Northwestern. Already the Nittany Lions (1-4, 0-0) have played three top-10 teams, including Connecticut (No. 6), Old Dominion (No. 7) and Northeastern (No. 8). Five of the six Big Ten squads that have field hockey teams were ranked in the top 20, which, along with Penn State and Northwestern, also includes Michigan State (No. 1), Michigan (No. 9) and Indiana (No. 17). Also released were the first installment of the national field hockey statistics. Penn State ranks No. 19 in scoring defense (1.58 goals per game), while goalkeeper Megan Asktin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) ranks No. 20 in the nation in goals against average (1.577) and saves (27).
