Head coach Portland takes medical leave of absence from women's basketball

University Park, Pa. -- Penn State women's basketball head coach Rene Portland is taking a leave of absence from the team, effective Monday, Nov. 22. Citing medical concerns related to her fainting episode last Sunday, Portland will not be involved in the Lady Lions' practices or games for an indefinite period of time.

Associate head coach Annie Troyan will serve as acting head coach in Portland's absence.

"This is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make in my career as a head coach," Portland said. "While I want to be with my team at this time, I also realize that I must make my health a priority. After taking into consideration the events of last week, and after talking extensively with my family, I have made the decision to take a leave of absence from the team. I know that Annie will do a tremendous job in leading the Lady Lions while I'm gone, and I look forward to returning when my condition permits."

"Rene has my full support in this extremely difficult decision," said Tim Curley, director of athletics. "Her health should be her No. 1 priority, and the Penn State community will support her as she takes the time she needs for herself."

The Lady Lions open the home season Tuesday vs. Duquesne at 7 p.m. for the first of a three-game homestand. After the Thanksgiving break, the team hosts George Mason on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. and then North Carolina on Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.
