Timbersports performance prompts donation to Penn College Forestry Club

A Forest Technology alumnus' impressive finish in this year's Stihl Timbersports Collegiate Invitational has resulted in a $1,000 donation to the Forestry Club at Pennsylvania College of
Technology.

Derek P. Bailey of New Tripoli, who graduated from Penn College in May, placed fifth overall during the Aug. 5-8 competition in Augusta, N.J., which was held in conjunction with a series qualifier for Stihl's professional championships.

Bailey, whose family long has been in the forestry business, is a 2002 graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School.

On the basis of a standout performance during the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Woodsman Meet at the College's Schneebeli Earth Science Center in April, Stihl deemed him one of the top four
collegiate competitors in the United States.

He was invited to participate in the six-man, three-event collegiate competition - comprised of single buck saw, stock chain saw and underhand chop - that was held during the New Jersey State Fair and later broadcast on ESPN.

In addition to awarding a trophy and other prizes to Bailey, Stihl donated $1,000 to the department or program of his choice.

The check was included in a recent letter from the event sponsor to Dr. Wayne R. Longbrake, dean of natural resources management, indicating Bailey's wish that the money be donated to the Penn College Forestry Club.
